Outdoorsmanship and (Wilderness) Survival Skills

Basic Orienteering and Survival Skills
This action-packed course introduces the basics of practical outdoor skills and wilderness survival.  We learn and apply our new skills in the abundantly varied terrain of our Wissahickon watershed.  Our daily explorations take place within the rich habitat that surrounds the Wissahickon Creek, from Fort Washington State Park along the creek’s path through the dramatic Valley Green section of Fairmount Park.  The opportunities for discovery are endless as the creek travels through this forested landscape.  We’ll become familiar with elementary survival skills including basic emergency first aid, poison ivy and tick avoidance, sheltering skills and simple shelter building, water purification, fire building, identifying edible and toxic plants, wilderness nutrition, climbing skills, catching fish and other aquatic life, and practical navigation.  We learn how the area surrounding the stream can provide most of our survival needs. This course is fast-paced and always outside.  Open to students entering grades 5-8.
