For students entering grades 8-11, this course includes a thorough study of the main topics of plane geometry and how these topics coordinate with one another. We discuss the properties of parallel lines, triangles, quadrilaterals, and circles. Students will learn the principles of deductive reasoning and mathematical proof, and to present arguments in a clear, orderly, orderly fashion. Emphasis on proofs is done especially in the section on congruent triangles. Other topics studied are similar figures, trigonometry, area and volume. Depending on the skill level of the students enrolled in the course, the topics covered may expand beyond these topics to include additional skills. If possible, the motivation for the additional topics will come from the specific areas indicated as a requirement on the syllabus provided by the students’ home schools.
*Students are responsible for purchasing the texts prior to the start of the course. Text Books will not be available for purchase on campus. These are the texts used by the Middle and Upper School Mathematics Department at Germantown Academy.
